Lapping is utilized to ensure that a surface is as flat as possible. When a part's surface is wavy or worn where it needs to be flat, lapping helps restore it to its former glory.
Lapping compound (a diamond slurry) is applied to the top of the lapping plate, which is perfectly flat.
The item that requires a perfectly smooth and flat surface is placed on top of the plate, inside of a drum that rotates on the surface.
The item inside the drum spins as the lapping plate beneath passes underneath. This ensures even lapping on the surface of the item. The slots in the lapping plate allow used compound and stripped material to be removed.
